I saw this beautiful Kea at Willowbank here in Christchurch. It was scratching at the hut in the enclosure and being generally cheeky. This reminded me of a tramp I did up Bealey Spur in Arthur’s Pass. We stayed at the small tin hut the night and a group of young kea flocked to us and proceeded to create mischief on the roof of the hut as we settled in for the night. I can still remember the sound of them bouncing around on the tin roof! So I added in the forest to the scene of this painting to recreate this memory.
